When I first started working in watercolour, I tried to be free and spontaneous. That, however, is not me. I am, by nature, methodical, patient, meticulous. I make a preliminary drawing over the course of several weeks, which I then transfer to the watercolour paper. The painting itself takes roughly a month to finish. All this time is spent directly in front of the subject, again one that has come together entirely by chance.
The larger of the pen-and-ink still lifes were developed with the same working process as the watercolours, some from the same preliminary drawings.
